About the Position: The person in this role will support multi modal transportation planning in the Minneapolis and St. Paul region through innovative approaches to collecting and analyzing transportation data and through development and application of cutting-edge travel forecasting models and tools. The Data Scientist or Associate Data Scientist will join a vibrant travel research and modeling team working on travel demand forecasting, travel behavior surveys, and creative analysis of all kinds of transportation data to drive planning and policy analysis. An Associate data scientist will perform their work under close supervision and mentorship of higher-level staff. A Data scientist will perform work with less supervision, will work on projects with more complexity, and will be involved in project management of small projects or project components.
About the Division: Metropolitan Transportation Services (MTS) conducts planning for the regional transportation system that includes highways, transit, aviation, freight, and bicycle and pedestrian connections. The Transportation Planning and Finance Team performs transportation planning for the region under the Council's role as the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization in the region. This work unit develops and implements the region's Transportation Policy Plan, Transportation Improvement Program, and Unified Planning Work Program. MTS staff work with many regional stakeholders in transportation, including counties, cities, MnDOT and other state agencies, transit providers, and transportation consultants.
Associate Data Scientist
Salary Range: Annual $61,381.00/Hourly $29.51 up to $87,048.00/ $41.85.00
Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Analytics, Data Science or related quantitative field. OR Associate's degree AND two (2) years of related research experience with statistical and/or machine modeling and/or developing web-based interactive data visualization tools.
Salary Range: Annual $66,352.00/Hourly $31.90 up to $94,120.00/$45.25
Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Analytics, Data Science or related quantitative field AND three (3) years of experience with statistical and/or machine modeling and/or developing web-based interactive data visualization tools. OR Associate's degree AND five (5) years of related research experience.
Highly desired qualifications:
Demonstrated ability in performing and communicating data analysis and statistical modeling of transportation data.
Experience working with travel demand models.
Experience in programming and modeling languages (R or Python preferred).
Experience in data mining, passive and or 'big' data, structured, unstructured, and semi-structured data.
